The ATLAS LEGO® model. (© Sascha Mehlhase)

A Unique Image: the ATLAS LEGO® model

A postdoctoral fellow, Sascha Mehlhase, at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen recently designed a model of the ATLAS experiment in LEGO® bricks. It illustrates the full details of this complex experiment.

It took Mehlhase about 40 hours of labor to design and assemble about 9500 pieces. The scale is roughly 1:50 and it is about 1 m x 0.5 m x 0.5 m in size. This inspired many others in the experiment, so now there are many such models around the world.
